The Research Management Unit (RMU) is responsible for managing and facilitating research activities within the Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya. As the largest faculty in UM with more than 500 academic staff, RMU plays a pivotal role in ensuring research productivity and sustaining a strong tradition of producing high-quality research recognized both locally and internationally.
This commitment is reflected in Universiti Malaya’s position as the premier university in Malaysia. The RMU is responsible:
- To provide support and manage internal and external research grants
- To support development of research strategies and planning based on data and current (and future) research trends.
- To promote research and interdisciplinary collaboration through dissemination of funding opportunities and research activities/performance
Services offered:
- Grant Application & Review (Pre-Award)
- Initiation and management of the application and review process for internal grants, including:
- UMSC CA.R.E Fund (Research Grant & Postdoctoral)
- Dato’ Dr. Mahmood Merican Medical Research Grant (MMRG)
- China Medical Board Research Grant (CMB)
- FOM Research Grant Clinics

- Budget & Costing Assistance
- Advice on preparing research budgets, especially for international grants.
- Support Letters & Approvals
- Preparation and endorsement of support letters for research grant submissions and collaborations.
- Grant Monitoring & Management (Post-Award)
- Coordinate the grant monitoring sessions for internal grants
- Research Grant Agreement Review
- Facilitation of research grant agreements involving fund transfers into UM and the opening of Research Grant Management System (RGMS) accounts, in collaboration with the Faculty Legal Office and Centre for Research Grant Management (PPGP)
- Progress, Final Reports & Extensions
- Access templates via: UM Portal → Research → Research Guidelines & Policies → Guidelines → BPGP Research Grant Guideline
- Endorsement by the Deputy Dean (Research & Innovation) required for certain grants.
- Research Workshops
- Targeted training and development sessions to enhance research capacity.
- Grant-related Promotion & Dissemination
- FOM Research Grant Calendar
- Regular dissemination of funding calls to FOM academic staff
- Monthly dissemination of available international grants compiled from ResearchConnect
